We spoke to Jenna about her band and music project Isla June which she's kickstarting over in L.A.

How would you describe your project/hobby to a complete stranger?

Isla June is my music project and brain child. I am the singer, songwriter, rhythm guitarist, and chief hustler. It’s always hard for me to pinpoint our exact sound, but I like to think it’s a mixture of genres that I grew up listening to and playing – folk, rock, with a touch of funk and soul. We even have the occasional horn section!

What kick-started it?

This project started off as a solo effort, always with a vision to turn it into something bigger. I had been in a couple bands throughout high school, but it wasn’t until college in New York that I decided to take a stab at playing by myself, mostly weekly open mic nights. When I moved back to LA, I missed the dynamic of collaborating with a whole band, so I set out to start Isla June. I wanted it to feel like musical entity even if I was leading it, which is why I chose not to just use my name.

What was the moment where you thought, ‘Yeah, I really love doing this?

By the time we played our first show (last September), it had been years since I was on stage with a group of musicians. We packed the venue and it was just a blast. I had almost forgotten how incredible the energy of that kind of live performance could be. It was a really special night and made me remember how much I love it.

What’s the end goal for it?

I think nearly every musician has the same dream – to share their passion and art with the world. I’m really no exception. I would love to take Isla June as far as it can go!
