After a four day weekend of the cultural extravagnza that is Art Basel Miami it is certain that this event has matured to more than a group of wealthy art collectors buying outrageously priced artwork to welcoming the masses to take part in all things art, culture and music. Mark my words, the integration of brands into this citywide event is only going to get bigger, and only the most creative experiences will be excepted. From South Beach to the upscale Design District, through to the City's rapidly maturing art district, Wynwood, the atmosphere was electric throughout (and the traffic was out of control).
To name only a few of the notable events from Art Basel 2012, would be the likes of DJ Dan Deacon controlling an audience with an incredible performance that crossed music, art & performance art at Grand Central. Absolute Vodka teamed up with the Cuban art collective Los Carpinteros (Marco Castillo and Dagoberto Rodriguez) to create Guiro, an outdoor egg-shaped wooden pavilion that looked like a space ship lit up at night on the beach. Ford and Milk Studios were at NADA (New Art Dealers Alliance), celebrating a fusion of art and cuisine by offering guests amuse-bouches from celebrity chef Hendenal while music played by ARP from inside a piece of artwork by Cyril Duval's.
Art Basel has truly made a mark on the US cultural calendar as a major event to stand up and take notice of. The chatter in the brand and music world is that it's the place to be for equity in the art and entertainment worlds and plans are already being discussed around how brands can take a lead in adding in deeper levels of music and entertainment to entertain and engage the masses of cultural sleuths who descend on the City for this week long event.
