Katie Leeman, FRUKT's Head of Design, offers up some tips on transforming your in-house design team
I was invited to speak at an event called 'Good to Great – How to transform your in-house design team' hosted by Aquent and Make Your Words Work. The panel consisted of four speakers including myself, Elenanor Broderick, Creative Director of RRD Creative, David Tye – Creative Head of Nationwide and Mel McVeigh – Creative Product Director & Managing Partner at Opposite Days.
The night started off with drinks and canapés and lots of industry chat and then we shared our tips and tricks on how to turn your in-house design team from Good to Great. To begin my talk, I tackled the perception problems that in-house teams face such as ‘internal teams are not as creative as agencies’ (which is completely untrue) and that it’s all about attitude when it comes to creating a change in your team. You need to behave like an external agency and be brave with your decisions.
I also touched upon the benefits of creating a creative workspace with your team and hiring people that are better than you when it comes to recruitment. I then finished off asking the audience to consider using Jeff Bezos’s Two Pizza Team Rule: the ideal team size is one you can feed on 2 large American pizzas, approximately 6 to 10 people. Why not indeed?
The night was a success and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I look forward to the next one. Unless it’s about something I have no clue about, in which case I’ll give it a miss.
