The Fix: 2017 musical round up

Simon Singleton, Music Editor at FRUKT London, gives us a rundown on the most promising talent that has graced our stages at The Fix this year.

THE FIX is FRUKT’s monthly live music night we curate in conjunction with BMI. Each month on the first Tuesday we host a selection of the best new breaking bands at esteemed central London venue The Social, run by the legendary Heavenly Records, which continues to be one of the UK’s best independent record labels.

We’ve had a whopping 41 acts play live for us this year so it’s impossible to detail all of them but here’re five to watch in the coming months. Have a listen to our special playlist of these and some other acts that have graced the stage.

Jalen N’Gonda

Beautiful sounding new soul singer from Maryland, USA, but now based in Liverpool. 2017 saw him awarded a NME New Music Of The Day, and he’s already supported Laura Mvula and Lauryn Hill, and played festivals including Tramlines, Beat Herder and Deershed. With a magnificent voice and great songs, he’s set for a big 2018 and we loved his show down The Social basement.

Fabian Secon

Initially pick up by DJ Target’s show for ‘Unsigned Track Of The Week’, this emerging RnB vocalist played an early set at THE FIX and his career has kept moving upwards since. He’s been BBC Introducing ‘Single Of The Week’ (as chosen by MistaJam) readied collaborations with Young T & Bugsey, AJ Tracey, and Kojo Funds, plus had three videos with nearly 150k views each on YouTube.

Sabella

Initially signed by influential tastemaker Line of Best Fit’s record label, Sabella has now inked with the mighty Polydor Records (part of Universal) and joined us at THE FIX’s fourth birthday party in October. She’s also recently supported Mullally and Rationale, and will soon be playing as part of Line of Best Fit’s Five Day Forecast, where it tips its big 2018 hopefuls. And her fanbase is growing fast – now with over 1m plays on Spotify, setting her up for the next 12 months nicely. Check out her track "Falling Without Feeling".

Phoenix & The Flower Girl

Brilliant melding of music and video from these talented artists, who played a great show down THE FIX in early 2017. They’ve been featured as a New Band Of The Day on The Guardian, and since their show for us, they’ve gone on to be featured by Clash Magazine and recently signed to the mighty Kitsune Records in France.

Giant Party

One of the best live bands we hosted this year, the unmissable experience that is Giant Party joined us to headline our birthday celebrations, following their show at the Jagerhaus at Bestival, which was one of the highlights of the weekend. Fans of Future Islands will rejoice at this band’s similar ability to transform a simple live rock show into something quite spectacular!

Everything By Electricity

Exciting new dream-pop band whose live show is something very special indeed, with multi-coloured lights fired from the stage floor and smoke haze fired through them! And they sound as good as they look – with a touch of Alvvays’ showgaze pop and the driving motorik of Jane Weaver, they headlined our Xmas special and were spectacular. They’re still very fresh so don’t expect an all-conquering 2018, but we feel they could be a slow-burning success over the next 18 months or so.
